Flor De Toloache — Mexican sounds straight from New York on a tour of Poland as part of the spring Siesta on the Road.
Flor de Toloache — a spectacular female phenomenon of Latin American music! Latin Grammy winners, New York’s Flor de Toloache are a true musical force that gracefully and boldly combines tradition with modernity. Their unique sound is a fresh, surprising take on classic Latin American tones — mariachi, cumbia, bolero and many other genres are given new life in their performance.
Like the magical toloach flower, used in Mexico in love potions, the artists enchant the audience with powerful vocals, stage charisma and artistic elegance. Each of their concerts is an energetic feast for the senses!
The cultural and musical diversity of the band members breaks boundaries and stereotypes, carrying a message of strength, freedom and female expression. “Las Flores”, as their fans call them, have already captivated audiences worldwide: from Mexico, through Europe, to Japan.
With five albums to their name, Flor de Toloache show no signs of slowing down. Their latest release, Motherflower, is an uncompromising, feminist manifesto of sound full of passion, courage and mariachi in a completely new edition.
Marcin Kydryński on Flor De Toloache:
“Siesta on the Road to Mexico! Here is Flor de Toloache. The world music of Frida Kahlo. Grammy-winning, received by Joe Biden at a White House concert, invited to the Kennedy Center Honors gala, the most famous Mexican mariachi band sets out to Poland as part of the spring Siesta on the Road tour. No one was prepared to meet them. Not even their obvious musical mastery and virtuosity. It wasn’t the sensual pulse of traditional and contemporary songs that secured Flor de Toloache their cult status. The fact is that in a mariachi group — the essence of the ‘macho’ idea — there are only women! In Mexico this might not have worked, so the ladies began to make music in the New York subway.
The New York Times called them a sensation and in 2014 the first album was released. For the next one the band already received a Grammy and on the third they featured guests of the caliber of John Legend. The girls with acoustic instruments, phenomenal voices. So much outstanding yet bright, danceable music. In our herbalarium Flor de Toloache is the datura flower. In Mexico the name of this flower, borrowed from Nahuatl, means “honorable”, or: “bow your head”. It is a plant known as “the one that causes visions”, because it produces strong hallucinations. For centuries Mexican shamans have smoked cigars made from its leaves and chewed its seeds during rites of passage into deeper consciousness. And we, every evening, will be subjected to magic and taken to a different, distant world by these envoys from the land of great Frida.”
SIESTA on the Road — the aim of SIESTA on the Road is to present live artists known from Marcin Kydryński’s Sunday program Pora Siesty and from the best-selling Siesta compilations. The host and artistic director of SIESTA on the Road is Marcin Kydryński, a radio host, author and lyricist, record producer and photographer, and co-organizer of the Siesta Festival in Gdańsk.
In Siesta, the interpenetration of cultures, the blurring of borders while respecting regional traditions, reconciliation beyond historical divisions — alongside the music itself — are the most valuable values.
