DIVINE TALES is a series of classes at the Children's University of Interesting History about mythology and religion, aimed at presenting the richness of human beliefs throughout history. Together, we will embark on a journey to the most distant times. We will also visit the farthest corners of our globe. The classes will explore the genesis, development, social functions, and symbolism of myths and beliefs from selected religious systems. We will pay attention to their impact on contemporary society and culture. After all, one cannot fully understand people without understanding what they believed in.
What will we talk about, among other things?
Olympus and company - the gods of ancient Greece
Greek mythology is one of the most fascinating and influential belief systems in human history. The classes aim to introduce participants to the pantheon of Greek gods and the most important myths, as well as their impact on the culture, literature, and art of ancient Greece, and their legacy in the modern world.
Star wars and the feathered serpent - religion in the land of chocolate
The Mayans, who lived a thousand years ago in the area of present-day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador, are the inventors of chocolate, a complex writing system, and an unprecedented way of measuring time. Their religion is one of the most complex and fascinating belief systems of pre-Columbian Central America. Participants will learn about Mayan gods (including the fearsome deity of the number 0), as well as bloody sacrifices, star wars, and the brutal game of ball.
