MASOVIAN MANTRA Michał Barański Quartet is a unique evening full of wonderful music, emotion and improvisation in an uncommon atmosphere blending jazz, Masovian traditional folk music and the music of India.
In 2022, the original album by leading double bassist and bass guitarist Michał Barański titled “Masovian Mantra” was released in the cult Polish Jazz series. The album combines Masovian folklore and Indian music with contemporary jazz, using a language that is at times complex, yet universal and inspiring. Native ethnic themes are connected with the region of southern Masovia, featuring a dominant three-beat mazurka meter. One can also hear inspirations from jazz fusion and ethno-fusion (including Weather Report, Pat Metheny, Joe Zawinul Syndicate) as well as contemporary artists like Tigran Hamasyan. Michał also refers to the elite of bassists and creators of the modern bass guitar school, such as Jaco Pastorius, Avishai Cohen and Hadrien Feraud.
Michał Barański – guitarist and double bassist, one of the most creative, searching and daring artists on the Polish jazz scene. In 2023 he received two Fryderyk music awards. His output includes dozens of records recorded alongside leaders representing various areas of the music scene. Recently he has been studying Carnatic music and in practice demonstrates Indian vocal percussion (konnakol).
