Sandomierz and the Rosarium in the Pepper Mountains #1

PROGRAM:

Meeting point in Warsaw, stop at Emilii Plater Street at 07:00; breakfast break en route.

The tour begins with a walk through the Pepper Mountains (Pieprzówki) — hills made of Cambrian shales from about 200 million years ago. The shales resemble ground pepper in color. Since 1979 the Pepper Mountains have been a nature reserve; they host xerothermic and steppe vegetation. This is the largest natural rosarium in Europe — we will visit it during the wild-rose flowering. From a viewpoint on the slope we will admire the panorama of Sandomierz and the Vistula valley (the Vistula flows about 60 m below).

Next, transfer to the center of Sandomierz. Touring the "Little Rome": we will walk the St. Jadwiga Gorge to St. James Church with the famous decorated brick portal called the Gate of Heaven; then the Piszczele Gorge toward the market square, entering through the Needle's Ear. At the market we will see the Gothic town hall from the mid-14th century and Renaissance townhouses. We will also climb the Opatowska Gate — it offers a panorama of the town and the Vistula valley.

During free time there is the option to visit the Underground Tourist Route (chambers and passages under the market), tour the Gothic cathedral or the Castle Museum. Jewelry lovers can visit the author gallery of Cezary Łutowicz (striped flint) — opposite the workshop you can take a photo with a giant striped-flint ring.

Fans of the series Ojciec Mateusz (Father Matthew) can visit the "World of Father Matthew" exhibition with film props and wax figures of the characters.

After the tour there will be a lunch break at a venue of your choice; return to Warsaw in the evening.
