There is no better moment to discuss the art of makeup, without which no opera performance can take place. After all, opera and carnival have been connected since the very beginning. It was during the carnival, in 1598, that Jacopo Peri's Dafne, considered the world's first opera, was staged. Opera buffa, from its origins, drew inspiration from Italian commedia dell’arte – one of the most recognizable forms of theater associated with street carnival shows and masks. The motif of the mask appears in librettos themselves (e.g., 𝘉𝘢𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘰𝘸𝘺 by Giuseppe Verdi, 𝘙𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘑𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘵 by Charles Gounod, or 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘬 by Krzysztof Penderecki), and even more often simply exists as a costume element. During the workshop, we will be inspired by the most beautiful masks from Polish Royal Opera performances. Using professional accessories such as face paints, special markers, glues, and gems, we will try to create carnival mask fantasies on our faces. All this under the watchful eye and with the support of makeup artist Anna Danikowska. The workshop will be highlighted by a performance from soloist Justyna Stępień, who will sing Oscar's aria from 𝘉𝘢𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘰𝘸𝘺 by Giuseppe Verdi. We invite children and their guardians to the workshop. You decide which role to take – makeup artist or model. Let's get to work! 🎨 The workshop is intended for children aged 9 and up.
