About the event

I invite you to a walk devoted to a topic usually discreetly omitted in tourist narratives.

WARNING! THIS WALK IS INTENDED FOR ADULTS ONLY.

Called the oldest profession in the world, prostitution has always been an embarrassing topic. Although in some countries it was fought using extraordinarily cruel methods, all proved ineffective. During a stroll through the centuries and streets of Warsaw we will examine a topic usually skipped in tourist stories — prostitution.

Today, passing by beautiful monuments, we usually do not know about their carefully hidden past.

You can find details about this event on the ticketing platform Evenea.

All event dates are published on the company website: https://www.zwiedzajznami.com.pl.

Along the way we will look for answers to questions such as:

  • How did Duchess Anna try to protect her sons Stanisław and Janusz from sexually transmitted diseases?
  • When was calling someone a “woman” an insult?
  • What was "wyświecenie" (not to be confused with "wyświęcenie") and how did Jan Matejko depict that event?
  • Who held power over women engaged in prostitution in the Middle Ages?
  • When did it happen that townspeople paid an additional tax without being urged?
  • What punishment threatened adultery in the Middle Ages?
  • Where did Polish words like “półświatek”, “lupanar”, “zamtuz” and others related to prostitution come from?
  • With what recurring event were the “raids” of ladies of negotiable affection on Warsaw associated?
  • Where was the first hospital treating shameful diseases opened?
  • Who first tried to help ladies of negotiable affection return to the path of virtue, what was the plan and why did it fail?
  • Why did the case of a certain confectioner, dubbed by the press the “indecent Turk”, particularly grab public attention?
  • Why did all the ladies of negotiable affection sometimes disappear altogether?
  • What did Saint Augustine, Karl Marx and Bolesław Prus write about prostitution?
  • Why did an undertaker have to fight establishments associated with red lanterns?
  • When and why did ladies called “książniczki” appear on the streets of Warsaw?
  • What kind of assistance did the “Warsaw Mutual Aid Society” provide and why did a Polish diplomat demand a name change?
  • Why does information about the location of madame Tomasowa’s brothel cause surprise today?
  • When and why did a mob destroy brothels and houses of ill repute?

See you.
