Nowa Huta is not only a unique urban project and an important chapter in Kraków's history, but also a district with an exceptionally rich artistic life. Thanks to numerous initiatives — both grassroots and institutional — the neighborhood has pulsed with culture and art for decades, permeating the everyday lives of its residents.
During the walk “Artystyczne oblicza Nowej Huty” we will discover how different faces of art coexisted within a single district. We will start at the Norwid Cultural Centre, observing the institutional face — a place where art was planned, organized, and made available to the local community.
During the meeting we will also uncover other faces: experimental, official, private, communal, educational, and theatrical. From institutions to private studios, from outdoor experiments to the educational dimension — we will see that art in Nowa Huta was not an addition to everyday life but an integral part of it.
In case of unfavorable weather conditions the activities will take a stationary form; participants will be informed of any changes in advance.
Lead: Monika Kozioł-Sumera — head of the Nowa Huta Heritage Laboratory at the Norwid Cultural Centre. A doctoral candidate in the discipline of art studies, graduate of art history and the postgraduate Museology Study at Jagiellonian University; scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and winner of the Kraków City Creative Scholarship. Curator of exhibitions and projects in contemporary art, author of texts devoted to art after 1945.
21 marca, godz. 17:45 — Wędrówka na spotkanie „jasnym dniom Jutra”. Kierunek – Nowa Huta! Andrzeja Munka w interpretacji antropologicznej
Shot in 1951 by Andrzej Munk, the film Kierunek – Nowa Huta! is often described as a model example of propagandistic socialist realist cinema. For the contemporary viewer, the stereotypical nature of the image may seem grotesque, and with cultural and social changes the codes allowing full interpretation of its content are now lacking.
At the meeting we will try to look at the film as a filmed version of the socialist myth, to better understand how and why images like this mobilized people to move and join in building the New Town “under the old walls of Kraków.”
Lead: dr hab. Monika Golonka-Czajkowska — cultural anthropologist and ethnologist, head of projects in cultural heritage, anthropology of memory and digital humanities; she has led, among others, NCN OPUS projects and was a senior researcher in the HERA (Horizon 2020) consortium.
