Point of View: Art Nouveau Architecture in Kraków // All In UJ
Date: 16 March (Monday)
Time: 18:00
Place: Magistrat Podgórza (Maryewski Hall), Rynek Podgórski 1, Kraków
Architecture is the only art we experience without asking. It accompanies us every day: on the way to work, during a walk, in spaces we often pass without reflection. What does the landscape of Kraków’s Art Nouveau buildings hide? What stories are written in the ornaments, façades and details from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries? Join the next expert panel of Point of View. This time we will look at Art Nouveau architecture and projects erected in Kraków at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Rich decorations, undulating lines, plant ornaments and decorative details form an intricate lace of streets. Together we will try to read their meanings. We will consider whether Art Nouveau was merely a style, or perhaps something more: an aesthetic manifesto, a response to civilizational changes and an expression of the modernity of its times.
Program:
- What is Art Nouveau and can it be unambiguously defined as a style?
- What historical and social phenomena influenced this way of designing?
- What examples of Art Nouveau can be found in Kraków’s architecture?
- Which architects represented Kraków at that time?
- Can Kraków boast of realizations that stand out on a European scale?
- What is the current state of access to these buildings and their protection?
The event is sponsored by the District Council XIII Podgórze.
- Jakub Jastrzębski — together with Małgorzata Korpalska he co-creates the Facebook profile “Igraszki z czasem”, where for six years they have been bringing closer the architecture of Kraków from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, with particular emphasis on Art Nouveau. He combines popularization with scientific and exhibition activities. Author of the outdoor exhibition “Art Nouveau in the architecture of Podgórze” prepared for the Podgórze Cultural Centre and its accompanying brochure, as well as articles including about Art Nouveau in the interiors of Kraków tenement houses and the Celestyn Czynciel tenement house. On a daily basis he works as an educator at the Podgórze Museum — a branch of the Kraków Museum. Co-author of the exhibitions “Separate, but together. On the 110th anniversary of the merger of Podgórze and Kraków (1915–2025)” and the “Podgórze Lexicon”, in which he focused on issues related to architecture, the built environment and industry.
- Helena Postawka-Lech — an art historian, graduate of the Institute of Art History at the Jagiellonian University. From 2010 to 2020 she was associated with the International Cultural Centre as a curator of public programmes. She deals with art criticism, cooperating, among others, with the magazine “Contemporary Lynx”. She regularly cooperates with cultural institutions, including the Małopolska Institute of Culture in Kraków, for which she prepared the interwar architecture trail in Krynica and the presentation “Małopolska modernist” as part of the Virtual Museums of Małopolska project. An avid birdwatcher and urban sketcher.
