The “Teatr Caffe” project was created from the needs of Nowa Huta residents who enjoy culture, attend the theatre and want to be part of it — not only to sit in the audience, but also to experience performances together and discuss them with others. It is a response to real cultural needs of people who for years have actively participated in the cultural life of this part of the city and want to do so even more often, in good company.
As part of the project we will organise regular group outings to various theatres. Watching performances together is an opportunity to share emotions, discover new themes and perspectives, and to have conversations that often begin in the auditorium and continue long after leaving the theatre.
In addition, we will meet in intimate, friendly places — before or after the performance, most often in cafés. This is a relaxed space for conversations, exchanging impressions and reflections, without judgement and hurry. For those interested there will also be theatre workshops that allow you to look behind the scenes and try your hand on stage.
In the first edition we invite you to the performance “Czerwone i czarne”. It is an adaptation of the classic 19th-century novel by Stendhal, recognised as one of the masterpieces of world literature. Its protagonist is Julien Sorel, the son of a poor carpenter from the small town of Verrières, who dreams of social advancement and tries to find his place in a world governed by ecclesiastical and secular authorities. During the performance, the audience together with the actors conduct a narrative investigation and interrogations, trying to determine who is really responsible for Julien Sorel’s life and tragic fate.
“Czerwone i czarne” raises questions about whether we are the architects of our own fate or rather act according to scripts imposed on us, and about mechanisms of power that often outweigh an individual’s personal choices.
