
MARIA JANION. RENEWER OF MEANINGS. THE PRE-JUBILEE YEAR As part of a series of meetings under the patronage of Professor Maria Janion, one of the most important figures in Polish humanities, we invite you to: - stage event: Weronika Szczawińska, Beata Bandurska - discussion panel: Witold Mrozek, Iwona Kurz, Paweł Goźliński, Kazimiera Szczuka (moderator) "Janion, her texts and other people" is a miniature stage event resulting from the meeting of director Weronika Szczawińska and actress Beata Bandurska with the thought of Maria Janion. Through a personal dialogue with her texts from the book "Women and the Spirit of Otherness," the artists will seek answers to the question of how they resonate within us today, but also how her public persona and image have settled in our memory. The memory of theater creators interested in the intertwining of culture and politics, especially in the scenic performances of femininity. In the second part of the evening, we invite you to a discussion with critics and cultural researchers, moderated by Kazimiera Szczuka. Winner of the "Polityka" Passport in the "Theatre" category. She collaborates with theaters across Poland, having prepared performances at, among others, TR Warszawa, the National Stary Theatre in Kraków, Komuna Warszawa, the Wrocław Contemporary Theatre, and the Jaracz Theatre in Olsztyn. She was also the artistic director of the Bogusławski Theatre in Kalisz. Beata Bandurska Actress. Graduate of the Aleksander Zelwerowicz State Theatre School in Warsaw. She debuted at the New Theatre in Warsaw. Co-founder of the Theatre Society, an independent organization that introduced socially engaged dramaturgy to the Polish stage. From 2000-2003, she performed at the Polish Theatre in Poznań, and from 2014-2017 in the ensemble of the Polish Theatre in Bydgoszcz. Since the 1990s, she has been associated with the critical trend in Polish theatre. She has played dozens of theatrical roles. Winner of individual awards, including at the Acting Art Festival in Kalisz and the Premiere Festival, as well as ensemble awards at the RAPORT Festival in Gdynia and the KONTRAPUNKT Festival. In 2022-2024, she appeared in the series "Gang Zielonej Rękawiczki," collaborated with Artur Żmijewski on the video work "Compassion," and appeared in the film "Primum non nocere" directed by Anna Wowra. In 2025, she played the role of Mother Joanna in the TV play "Mother Joanna of the Angels" directed by Weronika Szczawińska. Witold Mrozek Theatrologist, journalist. Completing a doctorate at the University of Warsaw on performances using the image of John Paul II, employee of the Academy of Art in Szczecin. Regular contributor to "Gazeta Wyborcza," editor of the magazine "Teatr." Iwona Kurz Critic and cultural historian, professor at the Institute of Polish Culture at the Faculty of Polish Studies, University of Warsaw. Dean of the Faculty of Polish Studies at UW. She deals with modern and contemporary Polish culture from a visual perspective, including issues of visual memory, body, and gender. She is also interested in cultural policies and cultural activities. Paweł Goźliński Editor, writer, writing teacher. Works at Znak Literanova Publishing House, previously editor-in-chief at Agora Publishing. Co-founder of the Institute of Reportage, head of the Polish School of Reportage. Former editor-in-chief of Books. Magazine for Reading and Duży Format, the reportage supplement of "Gazeta Wyborcza." Author of books: "God Actor. The Romantic Theatre of the World" (2005), "Jul" (2010), "Dziady" (2015), "Akan. A Novel about Bronisław Piłsudski" (2019), and co-author of the interview book "Bralczyk about Himself" (2023, with Karolina Oponowicz). PhD in humanities; studied, among others, at the School of Social Sciences at IFiS PAN under the supervision of Prof. Maria Janion. Kazimiera Szczuka Literary critic and historian, teacher. Since the 1990s, a member of the women's movement, organizer of the first women's marches, member of the Congress of Women, the Polish Gender Society, coordinator of the Save the Women committee. She has hosted television and radio programs. She teaches at the Janina Zawadowska LXI High School in the School Socio-Therapy Center in Warsaw. Author of books, including a collection of essays on literature "Cinderella, Frankenstein and Others. Feminism and Myth," "The Silence of the Lambs. On Abortion," an interview with Prof. Maria Janion entitled "Trances, Traumas and Transgressions": "Naughty Child," "Prof. Misia," and the publication "Lady Baba Jaga" about Jaga Hupało. Co-author and co-editor of many collective works, including the volume "The Deaf Mocking Laughter of Generations? The Contemporary School and Fascism." She lives in Warsaw.
