As long as the carnival lasts, no other life exists for anyone except the carnival one – wrote Mikhail M. Bakhtin, describing medieval festive practices. We wish to celebrate the special character of the period preceding Lent even today. It is a time associated with dance, fun, and festive feasting. Therefore, we invite you to an evening that is a feast for the spirit, where the comic intertwines with the tragic, where laughter may hide tears, and where play carries deep wisdom. During the concert, fragments from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's comic operas will be performed, excellently presenting the 'world turned upside down.' Nardo from The Pretend Garden-Girl will surely delight listeners with his linguistic skills, the love-intrigue-prone Cherubino from The Marriage of Figaro will remind us what love tastes like, and the joyful face of passionate feeling will be evoked by Papageno and Papagena in a delightful duet from The Magic Flute. The cheerful mood is also maintained in the sparkling, original musical ideas from The Barber of Seville by the master of comic opera – Gioachino Rossini. There will also be famous fragments from Carmen by Georges Bizet – an opera which, according to one of its first reviewers, Théodore de Banville, was written in a 'divine language, expressing the fears, madness, and heavenly longings of the human being, who, made of mud and blue, is only a passerby and exile on this earth.' The concert will conclude with the well-known Brindisi from La Traviata – a sophisticated waltz-rhythm toast in honor of love and fun, which will surely leave the audience in a truly carnival mood.
