Silence. Unspeakable crimes. The legacy of traumas that return after years.
Wars, genocide, massacres of civilians happen continuously. The world falls silent at the sight of yet another, ever more audacious crime and then forgets. Life goes on, and impunity triumphs, encouraging more murderers to act.
Krzysztof Warlikowski in his theatre examines the problem of responsibility and guilt, rooting modern conflicts in Greek tragedy. Taking on the text of one of his emblematic authors, winner of the European Prize for Dramaturgy — Wajdi Mouawad (Europe's Pledge / Przysięga Europy) — he expands his investigation to territories connected with the inheritance of trauma. Here darkness engulfs us all; we are all, without exception, entangled in traumatic events, whether we find ourselves on the side of victims or perpetrators. And even if we did not directly participate in dramatic events, guilt falls on us like a curse, like a stigma. Each contemporary massacre fits into an original order of killing that reaches far back, to mythological times and divine rapes connected with the desire for the human body.
Now imagine an old Europe sometimes soaked in blood, and sometimes watching from a distance the bloody slaughter that takes place continuously around the world. And consider whether you can truly feel innocent. And remember that you are responsible for what you feel.
