    About the event

    “Krzyżacy”.

Sienkiewicz, drawing on the history of Poland’s clash with the Teutonic Order, created a story that quickly became more than just a history lesson. Based on medieval chronicles, he built a sweeping depiction of battle, loyalty and national resistance at a time when Poles themselves needed symbolic support.

At the center of the tale he also placed the moving love story of Zbyszko and Danusia – an intimate and emotional narrative axis that gives the novel a human dimension. “The Teutonic Knights” is not only a literary classic but also a manifesto of hope and cultural strength that survived despite political subjugation.

The production is directed by Jan Klata, one of Poland’s most important theatre directors, long present on both Polish and international stages. His body of work includes over thirty productions and many prestigious awards, including the Polityka Passport, the Golden Yorick and the Konrad Swinarski Prize. His works have been repeatedly presented and honored at theatre festivals at home and abroad.

The adaptation was prepared in collaboration with Jan Klata by Ishbel Szatrawska – a playwright appreciated by both juries and audiences. In 2023 she was awarded the Wawrzyn – Literary Prize of Warmia and Mazury, winning both the main prize and the readers’ prize. She has collaborated with many institutions in Poland and Europe, receiving grants and awards, including through the DRAMATOPISANIE program, Stiftung Genshagen and the Landis & Gyr Stiftung.

After the performance there will be a discussion with the artists and invited guests.
