Abbas Kiarostami’s “Close-Up” is an extraordinary blend of documentary and fiction, based on a true story from the late 1980s. Hossain Sabzian, a poor print-shop worker and film lover, impersonates the famous Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, gaining the trust of a well-off family and promising them a role in a film. When the deception is revealed, the case goes to court, and Kiarostami obtains permission to film the trial.
The director goes further, asking the real participants in the events to re-enact them for the camera. The result is a work simple in form yet deeply philosophical, examining the protagonist’s motivations, social aspirations and hierarchies in post-revolutionary Iran, as well as the very nature of cinema and the power of art. “Close-Up” is a humanistic tribute to both people and the film medium, culminating in one of the most moving scenes in cinema history.
