The screening will be preceded by a talk about Makhmalbaf’s film and the connections between carpets and cinema by Anushe Dust, founder of Rug Mag. The film presents an almost mythical vision of nomadic life in southeastern Iran. Drawing on the poetics of "The Color of Pomegranates" and the work of Sergei Parajanov, Makhmalbaf here forgoes irony in favor of a clearer, more personal form. Image and sound intertwine in a unique way. Natural sounds of nature, singing and intense colors build a rhythmic, hypnotic structure in which longing transforms into a sensual, visual feast.
Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s "The Carpet" is a poetic tale spun by the very fabric of memory. The titular, intricately woven carpet, washed at the stream’s edge by an elderly couple, comes alive to tell the story of a young woman in love with a stranger from a clan. Makhmalbaf’s imagery revolves around the classic motif of a marriage postponed by a father who places obstacles before his daughter’s desires. From this simple plot grows a moving, yearning ballad in which love, freedom and time intertwine like patterns on a carpet.
