Training: Tension Headaches

Headaches are an extremely common problem in our society. They are often downplayed — the patient is told it’s a migraine and needs pharmacological treatment, or that “it’s just a headache” and must pass.

Meanwhile, the vast majority of headaches are tension-type. As therapists we can effectively help patients free themselves from pain.

This is a practical workshop designed to guide participants through the most common causes of tension-type headache, explain the nature of the problem and show how to resolve it. We will address the temporomandibular joints, drainage of the interior of the skull, intracranial membranes, the cranio-cervical and cervico-thoracic transitions, as well as the influence of internal organs on headaches.

The workshop is divided into sections; each section contains a theoretical part and a practical part during which you will learn therapy techniques. The practical part includes manipulation and mobilization techniques for the cervical spine, structural techniques for key areas (e.g. cervical fascia), cranial and fluid work, intraoral work, dry needling and acupuncture. Everything forms a coherent whole so that already the next day you will be able to use the acquired knowledge in your practice.

Program:

1. Course start — discussion of the issue from the perspective of therapeutic possibilities and an introduction to working with the concept of the 'Cranial Field'.
   • Practice: centering exercise
   • Practice: exercise to improve palpation skills
2. Neck
   • Practice: technique for the deep cervical fascia
   • Practice: technique for the carotid sheath
   • Practice: technique for global tension balancing within the neck
   • Practice: technique for the superior thoracic aperture
3. C0/C1 junction
   • Practice: technique for working with the C0/C1 junction
   • Practice: technique for working with the occiput
   • Practice: dry needling of the suboccipital muscles
4. Skull
   • Practice: technique for the cerebral plexus
   • Practice: technique for the tentorium cerebelli
   • Practice: technique supporting drainage from the interior of the skull
5. Stomatognathic system
   • Practice: technique for the medial and lateral pterygoid muscles
   • Practice: technique for the masseters
   • Practice: technique for mobilization of the facial bones
6. Gastrointestinal system
   • Practice: technique for working with the diaphragm
   • Practice: technique for global relaxation of the abdominal cavity
