At the workshop we'll first immerse ourselves in a short animation (Bimo Xinglü), in which a character made of color and form freely wanders through the worlds of Chinese painting, constantly changing its appearance — sometimes becoming a human, then an animal, and later a tree or part of the landscape.
Then we’ll see if we can transform the same way: we'll move our bodies, loosen our imaginations and get pulled into playful experiments with shape, movement and image, creating our own small artistic metamorphoses.
We'll use paper, crayons and modelling clay to draw, sculpt and invent our own characters. Together we will check what happens when one form begins to turn into another and the shapes we create come to life through imagination and free play.
The workshop will be led by Anna Szary.
Anna Szary – an art historian, educator, exhibition curator and author of texts on art. She gained experience at various cultural institutions (Polish Sculpture Center in Orońsko, Labirynt Gallery in Lublin, Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, Museum of Warsaw), and is currently associated with the Royal Łazienki Museum. She is a regular collaborator of the Andrzej Wajda Centre for Film Culture.
A piece of food in a bird’s beak turns into a man wandering through the landscapes of four important paintings from the history of Chinese art. As a being made of color and form he begins to take on arbitrary shapes — changing from man to bird and then to tree. Traveling takes on a different meaning when viewed in the context of animation: it is not so much about moving from place to place as about becoming one thing and then another.
