If a dream is not a prophecy or a message to be read “literally,” then how — as a structure of language — does it lead us toward a desire that the subject themself does not know? Why can desire only be grasped “obliquely": through metaphor, metonymy, impasse and lack of fulfillment, and not through what is explicit, coherent and satisfying? What does the case of Freud’s patient, the “brilliant” butcher’s wife [1] tell us about hysterical neurosis in women and about the relation of desire to the desire of the Other? What lesson follows for the psychoanalyst and for the analysand (regardless of gender)?
