A staged concert featuring the Deaf Percussion Orchestra conducted by Hubert Zemler.
We borrowed the title from American composer Pauline Oliveros (together with her reflection on deep listening). The original was a feminist electronic fantasy based on the symbolism surrounding one of Puccini’s most famous heroines, Cio-Cio-San. Our butterfly is not a woman. It is – according to its biological nature and the semantics of Polish Sign Language – Deaf. Or Deaf – because deprived of acoustic vibrations is its entire world. It is in such a reality that our favola in musica unfolds.
How to talk in that world about sounds, listening and music? We tried to use sign poetry, percussion and low-frequency vibrations for that. Because sometimes one listens more wisely from the outside, even if one does not hear. Listening creates parallel worlds, breaks down walls, but also kills. It is a choice not only practical and aesthetic, but also axiological and metaphysical.
