Why is anger good?
I remember my first workshops when I was a participant and just beginning to get in touch with my anger, while also learning to be with the anger of other participants.
I discovered how to find access to it and how to express it, while continuously staying in contact with myself and my body.
How to let anger flow through my body so it can come out and be released in the safe conditions of a workshop. It was an extremely cleansing and healing experience for me.
I also remember noticing that I stopped being afraid of other people's anger, and even when seeing people expressing anger I was fully with them, “cheering” them on in their process. This is how I managed to channel that emotion, while at the same time clearing the way for other emotions that had been stuck in my body.
ANGER is an emotion that in our culture is often not accepted. It starts from the time when we were children. We were not allowed to be angry. Girls are supposed to be obedient and well-behaved, but boys are also expected to be nice and well-behaved.
Punishments, condemnation, shaming appear. Surely each of us remembers our experiences related to this. As a result, unexpressed anger stays in us for a long time.
You may have experiences where you feel like you are boiling inside, but the anger is not expressed and remains held in the body. Then such suppressed anger waits for the right moment to get out.
However, quite often it emerges with much greater intensity and inappropriately to the situation. Other patterns may also be recorded in us: for example, we often react inappropriately to situations with anger, which greatly complicates our relationships and communication with others.
Repressed anger leads to tensions in the body, clenching of the jaw, clenching of fists, tensing and raising of the shoulders, which when continuously held manifests as pains in various parts of the body. Lowen called these chronic tensions.
Unexpressed anger closes relationships, leads to destruction, to unintended and unforeseen consequences. Anger communicates when our boundaries are being crossed and is needed to set those boundaries.
Therefore anger is an extremely important emotion for us and it is worth learning to be with it and to express it.
And what is your anger like? Do you express it or repress it? Or maybe you still need to get to know it, ground it, so you can express it appropriately to the situation and to the people who provoked it.
During the workshop we will look for and experiment with different levels of expressing anger, in order to access it and consciously express it while staying in contact with ourselves and our bodies. We will do this based on work with the body and voice using Alexander Lowen's method, together with understanding and connecting with ourselves.
