Pulsing with Taipei’s nightlife. Three women move to Taiwan’s capital to start a new chapter: Shu-Fen, unlucky in love and money, her teenage, feisty daughter I-Ann, and the devilishly charming little I-Jing. While the single mother runs her own dumpling stall at the night market, I-Ann works as a betel dealer — the local equivalent of snus — instead of studying, and I-Jing explores the neon-lit market’s nooks on her own.
In a city of big opportunities and equal disappointments, the Taiwanese-American director examines female family ties, full of cracks but also tenderness. The result is an energetic dramedy about how families aren’t chosen, but if we could choose, we might invite... a meerkat. And what’s up with the left hand?
The film was directed and co-written by Shih-Ching Tsou. Tsou debuted over 20 years ago working with Sean Baker; together they directed films including “Take Out”, and Tsou produced films such as “Starlet”, “Tangerine”, “The Florida Project” and “Red Rocket”. Sean Baker is also a co-writer on “Left-Handed Girl” and the film’s lead producer, also responsible for editing.
The film is Taiwan’s official submission for the Oscars; its world premiere took place at the Cannes Film Festival, and the film is now continuing its festival run, winning awards. Critics praise the assured direction, the dynamism of the dialogue, and the portrayal of family relationships from a child’s perspective.
