Korea, 1930s. A lowborn con man plots to seduce a beautiful Japanese heiress to seize her fortune. To do this he places the titular handmaiden — a compliant female grifter — into the heiress’s inner circle so she can win her trust and become her confidante. The Handmaid is a story of a love triangle, desire, sexual fantasy and calculated revenge. Seen from multiple perspectives, the intrigue changes dramatically as minutes pass, heading toward a subversive finale.

Park Chan-wook created a visually striking, tension-filled spectacle in which nothing is as it first appears. The Handmaid won the hearts of the Cannes festival audience, where the film premiered.

    Press voices:

    • “‘This film is the ‘Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ of Korean director Park Chan-wook. A stunning conclusion to the vendetta saga, with perfectly balanced elements that audiences loved in the director’s previous films. ‘The Handmaid’ is a masterpiece. An absolutely perfect tale of revenge.” — wPolityce.pl
    • “‘This film is a tour de force in every respect. Based on Sarah Waters’s bestselling novel The Thief, it seduces and deceives the viewer with intrigues, mounting tension, shifting perspectives, and the revealing and concealing of the characters' truths.” — Entertheroom.pl
    • “‘Cinematically and intellectually fulfilled, while also delivering a lot of fun.’ — Filmweb.pl
    • “‘Intense and sensual, well acted, and above all offering a good measure of cinematic pleasure.’ — Interia.pl
    • “‘The Handmaid has something of spy cinema, an erotic thriller of the 80s, as well as a fairy tale and a costume drama. The suspense and perspective shifts prevent us from knowing the characters’ truths until the very end.’ — wysokieobcasy.pl
    • “‘The Handmaid (…) is simply a great erotic thriller that confirms Chan-wook Park doesn’t make bad films and remains a leading director of contemporary cinema; his productions are always worth waiting for.’ — moviesroom.pl
