Kujawiak dances are very beautiful and romantic, but at the same time, due to the specific body movement and unhurried rhythm, they are quite difficult to dance.
They require time to settle well into our legs. The characteristic rubato tempo allows us to dance them by moving in a specific 'breathing' way.
Historically, they are associated with regions such as Kujawy, Łęczyckie, and northwestern Mazowsze, and are now known almost throughout Poland.
However, the further one is from the 'source,' the more the character of the dance undergoes transformations. In places where the rubato tempo has been lost, Kujawiak melodies are simply 'waltzed.'
The way of dancing was also influenced by the place where it was performed. Under a village thatch, the step was more walking. In 'gentlemen's' salons, it was more sliding and flowing 'with breath and cloud.'
At old village parties, the cycle of dances played in succession, without a break, was often called a 'suit.' In Kujawy, such a suit was called 'kujawiak.' It consisted of three dances played in increasingly faster tempo: walking - the proper kujawiak - oberka. These dances transitioned almost imperceptibly from one to another.
In summary, during our January workshops, we will learn to dance and accelerate in dance, starting from the patterned walking through kujawiak to oberka. Besides steps, we will also learn the characteristic spinning in pairs typical of kujawiaks, rubato 'breathing,' and the use of various simple embellishments.
Interestingly, the music and dances from Kujawy are close to rhythms that we find in very popular Scandinavian couple dances, including Swedish polska and slängpolska.
🔳 During our workshops, you will master the steps and rules applicable in non-stage forms of traditional dance, performed at dance parties, so that dancing brings you as much pleasure and joy as possible.
🔳 Our workshops can also be treated as a dance practice or fitness classes during which we will get rid of unnecessary calories to traditional Polish music.
🔳 During the workshops, there will be rhythmic exercises that will help you develop a sense of rhythm, motor coordination, strengthen your physical fitness, and give your dance movements strength, fluidity, and lightness.
🔳 It will be a large portion of inspiration, good fun, and a pleasant way to spend free time in the company of fantastic people who come to our workshops.
🔳 It will also be an opportunity to meet interesting people, which will help you quickly find a dance partner for any occasion when traditional music is played.
