The cat is used to spending days in its own company. It paces its feline paths and sleeps in its favorite spots in a house that, although full of signs of human presence, seems to belong only to it... But for a time.
When a mysterious flood engulfs the world known to the cat, the only refuge from the great wave becomes an old wooden boat. Others also find a chance for survival in it – a capybara, a bird, a lemur, and a dog – among whom the cat's nature and independence are put to the test. Drifting through mystical, waterlogged landscapes, the animals collectively confront the terror of the elements and increasingly greater challenges. The dangerous voyage slowly transforms into a symbolic journey, in which each undergoes a transformation of character and discovers new kinds of sensitivity within themselves. By cheering on this extraordinary group of companions in their adventure, we ourselves become part of the crew.
“Flow” is a tale of interspecies friendship and solidarity, with each frame contributing to a captivating visual odyssey. It is a warm, moving story for both older and younger audiences.
“Flow,” after its world premiere in Cannes, began an intense festival journey, winning a number of awards (including four laurels at the most important event dedicated to animation, the Annecy festival) and the European Film Award, and is tipped for an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Animated Feature. Latvia, the director's homeland, also selected the film as its official candidate for the Oscar in the category of Best International Feature Film. Among the numerous favorable voices, Guillermo del Toro, the Mexican director and screenwriter known for such Oscar-winning productions as “Pan's Labyrinth,” “The Shape of Water,” and “Pinocchio,” also joined in. These images are a wonderful, breathtaking beginning that I would wish for the future of animation – del Toro admits.
