'Zen meditation is a natural state of mind. It is not an extraordinary state. In Zen, we learn to cultivate this natural state of mind. The instruction I will present is very precise. One might get the impression that something extraordinary needs to be done, but it serves to find the natural, proper state of mind that we have always possessed. It is also accessible without instruction. These guidelines are meant to provide structure, to help train so that the experience of the natural state of mind not only occurs but is constantly available. The goals of meditation can be understood in various ways. One could say that it serves to regain alertness, helps to awaken, to be present, to wake up from the 'sleep' in which we spend most of our time during the day: daydreaming, unconsciousness, separation, duality, returning to the reality of life.'
