We invite you to a weeklong intensive ceramics course for beginners and advanced ceramicists who want to develop their skills and learn new techniques.
- 1. DAY — MONDAY
- 11:00–17:30: Throwing
- discussion of types, composition and properties of clay bodies
- learning clay recovery/regeneration
- methods of shaping ceramics (building with coils)
- methods of shaping ceramics (slab technique)
- ceramic decoration (incised, embossed, bas-relief)
- 2. DAY — TUESDAY
- 11:00–14:00: Throwing
- use of molds (plaster and others)
- application of various throwing/handbuilding techniques
- 14:30–17:30: Slip casting
- discussion of properties and preparation of casting slip
- casting from slip in plaster molds
- coloring casting slips with pigments
- masking techniques: wax resist
- 3. DAY — WEDNESDAY
- 11:00–14:00: Casting
- ceramic decoration: sgraffito, pastillage, stippling, resist techniques
- 14:30–17:30: Firing
- basic safety concepts
- types of electric kilns and their equipment (power, construction, purpose, maximum firing temperature)
- operation and maintenance of the kiln
- loading and unloading the kiln
- firing curves
- discussion of possible firing errors/unintended firing effects
- 4. DAY — THURSDAY
- 11:00–17:30: Decorating
- decorating ceramics with majolica, underglaze paints, applying decals
- use of precious metals and their firing techniques (gold, platinum)
- 5. DAY — FRIDAY
- 10:00–16:00: Glazing
- introduction to different glazing techniques (brush technique)
- glazing and engobing the created pieces
- pouring technique, dipping technique, spray technique (compressor, pump)
- use of auxiliary media
- errors and successes
- retouching (additional glazing, sanding)
