A cult horror from the creator of “Frankenhooker” and “Basket Case”.

ABOUT THE FILM

“Brain Damage” tells the story of a young New Yorker whose life is turned upside down by an extraordinary parasite living in his brain. The mysterious creature offers ecstasy and otherworldly pleasure - in return demanding increasingly brutal “favors.” It’s a tale of addiction, control and loss of free will, dressed as a mad horror that with each scene pushes the boundaries of good taste and convention.

Frank Henenlotter’s film is the essence of late-’80s New York horror cinema: cramped apartments, night streets, dirt, neon lights and an atmosphere of permanent threat. “Brain Damage” mixes body horror, black comedy and grotesque, creating a world both repulsive and hypnotic. There are many practical special effects, physical literalness and surreal ideas that make the film feel like a drugged nightmare - intense, unsettling and absolutely like nothing else.

Frank Henenlotter — creator of the cult “Basket Case” series and “Frankenhooker” — develops his characteristic style in “Brain Damage”: body horror, dark humor and urban grotesque. Over time the film has become one of his most important and acclaimed works, often cited as the most coherent and mature point in his filmography. Today it is regarded as a full-fledged cult classic of the ’80s, valued for its uncompromising nature and still-relevant commentary on addiction and control.
