We invite you in February to the Academy of Traditional Dance for workshops on SWEDISH DANCES.
The goal of our workshops will be to learn and master at a basic level the characteristic and most common steps in traditional Swedish dances such as: hambo-polska, polska and slängpolska.
They have a huge number of variants and are danced in pairs both in turning versions and in procession-style forms to triple meter rhythms in 3/4 and 3/8.
Some roots of these Swedish dances can be traced back to Poland, as indicated by the often-appearing dance name “polska” — due to cultural and musical-dance inspirations that flowed to Sweden from Poland through court contacts at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. The evolution of court dances (including the polonaise and minuet) caused them to become faster, less ceremonial and take on a folk character in the Swedish countryside, with characteristic turns and improvisations.
During the workshops you will learn steps and rules applicable in non-stage forms of traditional dance performed at social dances, so that dancing brings you as much pleasure and joy as possible.
For those who have already “dabbled” a bit, the workshops can be treated as dance practice or a fitness session.
During classes there will be rhythm exercises to help develop a sense of rhythm, motor coordination, strengthen physical fitness and strength, and give dance movements fluidity and lightness.
The workshops are also an opportunity to meet new people and have a pleasant time among fantastic people. It's a big dose of inspiration and good fun.
