Jeff Lebowski, nicknamed “The Dude” (Jeff Bridges), is an unemployed easygoing guy and former hippie who lives by his own philosophy—slowly, without hurry or needless ambition. His days are spent listening to music, smoking marijuana and bowling with friends: the explosive Vietnam veteran Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) and the good-natured, somewhat lost Donny (Steve Buscemi).
The Dude’s peaceful existence is disturbed when two thugs burst into his apartment demanding repayment of an alleged debt contracted by his wife. It quickly turns out to be a mistake—the thugs have confused him with a wealthy millionaire of the same name. The biggest victim of the whole situation, however, is the Dude’s beloved rug, which prompts him to visit the “Big” Lebowski to demand compensation.
This seemingly trivial matter drags the Dude into a whirl of absurd events connected to the millionaire’s wife Bunny’s kidnapping. Forced to deliver the ransom, accompanied by the overzealous Walter, he inadvertently complicates the whole plot, becoming entangled in a world of big money, family secrets and shady characters. Also appearing on the scene are the mysterious Maude Lebowski (Julianne Moore) and the eccentric bowling rival, Jesus (John Turturro).
A series of misunderstandings and unlucky events leads to a tragicomic finale where absurdity mixes with dark humor—in the style typical of the Coen Brothers.
