For those familiar with Liam Andrews’ work in MY DISCO and BIG BRAVE and Daniel Szwed’s solo output and his work with the group BNNT, the result of their current collaboration is both a synthesis and an extension of these fascinating aesthetics.
From the pair’s conjured hypnagogic mechanics emerge glittering, black fractal structures that recall gothic constructions. From distorted, phantom-like dark tempos, precisely pinpointed details cut through, drawing the listener into a complex, hypnotic space of meditation beyond human notions of time.
Both organic percussion and raw, synthetic abstraction of electronic distortions evoke matter of telluric origin seeping into our reality. Elements of these constructions are intense bands of molten bass, oxidized surfaces of bells, cymbals and other overdriven percussion, which from within burst the vertical planes of the midrange with their unsettling dynamics. This spectral universe organizes itself around the propagation of a new kind of dark intensity: a deep, absolutely black void open to the listener’s free interpretation.
Liam Andrews – a UK-born Australian musician and ceramic artist, best known as the guitarist of the experimental punk band MY DISCO and recently as a co-creator of the EROS project (with Karl O’Connor and Boris Wilsdorf). His work is characterized by a fondness for atonality and minimalism; he is interested in the influence of immediate surroundings on musical creation. Andrews’ latest works released under the name AICHER focus on using field recordings of accidental acoustic phenomena: precise use of feedback, dissonances, unstable pulsing rhythms and very low frequencies create music that is unsettling and held in a constant state of tension.
“Defensive Acoustics” – AICHER’s debut – is a document of a performance recorded with Rohan Rebeiro in the cellar of an abandoned pharmacy in Kanazawa (Japan). The recording uses the cave-like acoustics of the space and the related degradation of musical structure and ensuing extreme acoustic pressure. The album will be released in a limited edition of 100 copies (Downwards Records).
Andrews has performed at many international festivals, including Berlin Atonal, Dark Mofo, Unsound, Roadburn, Donau, Supersonic and Avant Art. He has toured extensively across Europe, the British Isles, North America, Japan, Southeast Asia and Australia. In 2023 he was invited to take part in two European tours of the Canadian band BIG BRAVE, eventually joining the group permanently; work on their ninth studio album is set to begin in 2025. Andrews participated in recordings for Ben Frost’s album “Scope Neglect” (Mute Records, 2024) and Regis’ “Hidden In This Is The Light That You Miss” (Downwards Records, 2020).
Daniel Szwed – drummer and graphic designer. Co-creator of the BNNT collective (with Konrad Smoleński), with whom he has worked in the sphere of sound and image since 2008. In his explorations he relies on a sparse kit, seeking new textures and timbres of sound. He electrifies drums, using rhythm as a base to venture into technoidal forms and metallic afterimages. Aggressive playing is sometimes wrapped in grainy, drone-like bands, and at other times touches quasi-metal forms.
He uses percussion unconventionally, builds reverb, turns toward raw techno and rough noise music. He balances on the edge of electroacoustics, metal and industrial, setting direction with measured tone and ritual form. Together with Patryk Daszkiewicz, Mateusz Rosiński and Krystian Piotr (LAS) he co-creates the HISS collective–label. In 2024 he was affiliated with the SHAPE+ platform. He has performed at many festivals, including Opera, CTM, Unsound, Intonal, Avant Art, Fonomo, Primavera, Up to Date, OSA, Pop-Kultur, Iceland Airways.
