Nuad Bo Rarn, traditional Thai massage, appeared in Thailand inspired by the health-promoting work of doctor Shivago (Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha). The tradition was mainly passed down orally; the main center of education and practice is in Chiang Mai.
Thai massage is a multifaceted healing method — sometimes it resembles a dance full of loving-kindness (“loving-kindness”, Buddhist “Metta”), other times it is a precise therapeutic system or touch meditation in movement. It includes work with energy lines (sen), acupressure of therapeutic points, reflexology and stretching techniques resembling yoga poses — hence it is sometimes called “yoga for the lazy.”
Beneficial effects: balancing and stimulating the energetic body, removing blockages, stimulating circulation and the lymphatic system, increasing immunity, relaxing muscles, mobilizing joints and helping with pain complaints. Additionally, the practice increases coordination and body awareness of the person giving the massage and introduces an element of calm.
Mate Thai — masseur, teacher, course organizer. Massaging since 2014. He draws inspiration from teachers such as Balazs Nemeth (Bali), Pichest Boonthume (Chiang Mai) and David Lutt. For over a decade he has been studying, massaging and teaching Thai massage techniques with commitment.
