During the workshop we will focus on facial expression and body language as some of the most important narrative tools in comics. The starting point will be nonverbal communication and the ways we read emotions from faces and gestures. We will consider why drawings easily fall into patterns that lead to unemotional, unconvincing characters and where these entrenched ways of depicting emotions come from.

I will show that the key question when planning an illustration is “What should the viewer feel?”. It is from that decision that the panel, the scene and the whole story begin. We will also work with grotesquely exaggerated expressions – as an analytical tool that helps better understand the limits of realism and consciously shift them in a stylized line, even when the final approach uses subtler means of expression.

We will also address how drawing emotions deepens the narrative of our stories and affects shaping an individual drawing style and character design. The workshops are intended both for comic creators and for illustrators interested in deepening work with conscious storytelling through drawing – so that our characters truly experience something and the viewer can feel it with them.
