About the film:
“You’re not even fit to be a servant!”, her husband tells Delia, taking her pay with one hand and delivering a stinging slap with the other. Not funny? Or perhaps you will still have a good time in this (un)pleasant company? Tomorrow Will Be Ours is a powerful, yet funny and emotionally rich female voice that became one of the biggest box-office hits in Italy, even outselling Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer there. This is due, among other things, to one of the most surprising — and at the same time satisfying — film endings of recent years.
Tomorrow Will Be Ours is the debut of comedian and actress Paola Cortellesi, who, following in the footsteps of Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), also plays the lead role. Every one of us can identify with Delia, because we too do impossible things every day – we manage home and work, children and elderly family members, soothe a husband’s bad moods or a teenage daughter’s emotions. Delia works her hands to the elbows, and in return she only gets more nagging, reproaches and sulks. She is also convinced that her daughter, who is about to get married, faces a similar fate. Yet one day a letter arrives that provokes her to rebel and leads her to surprisingly bold acts that no one expects from a housewife. Tomorrow Will Be Ours radiates a spirit of change, belief in the power of women and female solidarity. It is also an ode to the beautiful but stormy mother-daughter relationships.
This Italian hit takes place in postwar Rome recovering from crisis and refers to neorealist works, yet it inserts contemporary content into that noble tradition. Because Tomorrow Will Be Ours speaks of a collective awakening, of women who were the first to dare to oppose the legacy of violence. Mixing laughter and tears, directly touching painful experiences while remaining as light as a Roman holiday, Cortellesi’s film proves that the future lies — literally — in our hands. Have we achieved anything for ourselves since our grandmothers’ times? Yes, and we should guard it firmly, the director says.
Cortellesi’s film, set to Italian ballads, guides us through compassion, rage, laughter and emotion, confronting us with brutal truths while offering endless reserves of hope. Bella ciao!
