The latest solo project by Paweł Szamburski – clarinetist, improviser and composer – situated at the intersection of concert, performance and audiovisual experience. The starting point is the relationship between sound and light and the evolution of these two fundamental orders of human perception, which for thousands of years have shaped how we listen, see and understand the world.
Szamburski processes musical quotes and gestures to create a coherent audiovisual narrative. He constructs a minimal stage space using various light sources: from spark, fire, plasma, incandescent light, laser, to the phenomenon of sonification of light – the process of transforming light data into sound. Each stage here is more a symbolic state than a specific era – a metaphorical record of experience, emotion and a way of listening to the world.
Sonus Lux is therefore an intimate story about cultural universals that Paweł Szamburski has consistently explored in his earlier projects – about how sound and light, regardless of era or culture, organize the spectrum of human experience.
