Our “Suits from Kujawiak” is a workshop dedicated to those who already have some skills; among other requirements is the ability to spin smoothly in the first direction — clockwise.
During the workshops we will expand skills to spinning in the so-called “four directions” (on KSEB and on ODSIB), smooth transitions from the figurative walking through kujawiak to oberek, and the use of decorative steps: “obłoczek”, “breathing” and accenting with the feet.
Kujawiaks are very beautiful and romantic dances, but because of the specific body movement and unhurried rhythm they are quite difficult to dance. They require time to settle into our legs; their characteristic rubato tempo makes it possible to dance them moving in a specific, “breathing” way.
Historically associated with the Kujawy region, Łęczyckie and north-west Mazovia, kujawiaks are today known almost throughout Poland. The farther from the “source”, the more the character of the dance changes — in places where the rubato tempo has been lost, kujawiaks are simply “rolled”.
The way of dancing was also influenced by the place where it was performed: under a village thatched roof the step was more walking, while at the “manor” courts it was danced more advancing and undulating, i.e. with the so-called “breath and obłoczek”.
At old village parties the cycle of dances played in sequence, without a stop, was often called a “garnitur” (set). In Kujawy such a set was called a “kujawiak” and consisted of three dances played in increasingly faster tempos: the walking dance, the proper kujawiak and the oberek. These dances flowed almost imperceptibly into one another.
During the workshops you will learn the steps and the rules applicable in non-stage forms of traditional dance performed at dance parties, so that dancing gives as much pleasure and joy as possible.
For those who have already “tasted” it, the workshops can be treated as dance practice or a fitness session. The classes will include rhythmic exercises that will develop your sense of rhythm, movement coordination, strengthen physical fitness and strength, help get rid of excess calories and give your dance movements fluidity and lightness.
During the workshops you can meet and make friends with new people and spend time in a pleasant atmosphere. It will be a large portion of inspiration, good fun and a nice way to spend free time among fantastic people. The workshops are also a place where it is possible to find a partner to dance with at any occasions when traditional music appears.
