Song has always arisen from a deep need to find the source of power and mystery. However, it seems that in the modern world song lies in some concealment, hidden at the deep bottom of life – in oblivion.
We want to check whether the need for singing and for song has indeed faded. Do we still have the primal strength to return to the sources from which the voice emerges? We try to reach the spaces from which songs come. Beyond the chaos of insignificant, empty, and often aggressive sounds of everyday life in which we live, we wish to find true voices and tones of existence. Through singing we want to learn whether a journey to the deeply hidden archaic world is still possible.
To the sources that quietly dry up.
By titling our performance TO THE CORE we defined the realm of finding sounds and rhythms we are heading toward. We extract them from Polish folk songs, primordial songs. At their base are varied phonemes of archaic syllables, ancient tones and melodies. They form music of emotions expressed in extreme situations: death, birth, weddings and partings, as well as states of erotic desire and fear of war and annihilation. Borderline sounds permeate all elements: water, fire, air and earth. The instrument of the body expresses them.
To bring out the voice of primalness one must go toward the core. To summon seemingly simple rhythmic and melodic patterns discovered by Chopin and Szymanowski. To reveal archaic tones and sounds reaching the sources of singing, like Lutosławski, Karłowicz, Górecki. To listen to how much primitive, shared pain and fear there is in folk song, how much attraction and rejection, love and hate, how much magic, warning, despair and joy. To find the song’s DNA code.
We journey toward that code.
In the primordial acoustic landscape we discover rituals of sounds. Their preserved traces are found in songs of night, morning, noon, west and evening. The authenticity of discovered old songs – chosen from the volumes of Oskar Kolberg’s works, from collections of songs recorded by Father Władysław Skierkowski and many others and noted by us during ethnographic wanderings – manifests in the themes through which archaic sounds are conducted by us. These themes form parts of the show and focus on sowing and harvest, weddings and war, birth and death, human poverty and fate, and also — sacrifice.
However, we do not sing stories.
We sing the traces left at the bottom of existence.
