    About the event

THE POWER OF WORDS. ON JEWISH LANGUAGES

    📅 21.11.2025–08.06.2026

What language do Jews speak today? What does Yiddish sound like — omnipresent in Polish towns and cities before the War, today barely audible? What does it have in common with Hebrew, Judeo-Arabic, Judeo-Persian or Ladino?

"The Power of Words" exhibition presents languages that accompanied Jews scattered across the globe over the centuries. They shaped the sphere of the sacred, everyday communication, and religious, social, local and national identity. Hebrew is at the core of this tale — an ancient, sacred and modern language.

    Featured original objects include:

    • a Babylonian magic bowl
    • a richly decorated Sephardi Torah mantle
    • antique tomb stelae with Greek epitaphs
    • Hebrew amulets

Exhibits come from the collections of the POLIN Museum and from institutions such as the Jewish Museum in Prague, the Jewish Museum in Rome, the Jewish Museum in Berlin, the Jewish Historical Institute and the National Museum in Lublin.

Contemporary art and music on display include works by Mordechai Ardon, Moshe Castel, Monika Krajewska, Ewa Gordon, Helena Czernek, Mark Podwal, Oded Ezer, Ella Ponizovsky Bergelson, Anna Elena Torres, and music by Maria Ka, Vittoria Hanna, Daniel Kahn.

    Curator: Dr Tamara Sztyma
