About the film:

“The Piano Teacher” is a study of the dark corners of the human psyche and sexuality, based on the prose of Elfriede Jelinek. The main character, Erika Kohut, is an acclaimed pianist and a strict music teacher who, despite her age, remains in a toxic, tension-filled relationship with her controlling mother. Her emotional and erotic life is marked by deep deficits, which she attempts to discharge through obsessive devotion to music, domestic quarrels and acts of self-harm.

Her hidden fascination with pornography and dark instincts is put to the test when a young pupil fascinated by her appears in her surroundings. The initial infatuation quickly turns into a dangerous, masochistic game for which the young man is not prepared. The director's cold, detached style builds tension that becomes an ideal starting point for a shared analysis of the dark recesses of human nature.

About the series:

{Curtain Conversations} is a series of film screenings combined with discussion. Psychoanalysis — as with other works of art — provides the film with a rich toolkit for examining and unraveling the phenomena addressed by cinema. The wanderings to which the human psyche so often succumbs can sometimes be explained using psychoanalytic concepts. Joint reflection and discussion can be an attempt to explore the functions and meanings of the titular curtain: does it serve to defend, reveal, or capture what eludes straightforward readings?

The series assumes monthly discussion meetings with special guests, overseen by Justyna Dworczyk.
