    About the event

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2025 goes to the Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, known in Poland for "Satan's Tango," "The Melancholy of Resistance," and "War and War". Wishing to bring Krasznahorkai's work closer to you, together with the Timeless Film Festival Warsaw, we have reached for his fruitful collaboration with his friend, film director Béla Tarr. Thus, we invite you to a screening of a film by this excellent screenwriter-director duo: 🎬 "Werckmeister Harmonies" 📅 15/02 Sunday at 16:00 About the film: Andreas Werckmeister was a seventeenth-century musicologist whose work contributed to the spread of the principles of harmony still in force in Europe today. However, Béla Tarr's film is a tribute to atonality: everything enigmatic, poetic, and unsaid. According to film scholar Rafał Syska, "Werckmeister Harmonies" is his most allegorical and ideologically developed work. In this historiosophical parable, a loose adaptation of László Krasznahorkai's prose ("The Melancholy of Resistance"), the doyen of slow cinema wanted to examine the origins of totalitarianisms. The action takes place in an unnamed village, where one day a circus arrives, arousing the distrust of the inhabitants. The ambiguous exhibit standing in the market square – "the largest whale in the world" – and the arrival of the mysterious Prince lead to the outbreak of social unrest and riots. Maintained in the characteristic black-and-white aesthetic of the Hungarian director, "Werckmeister Harmonies" weaves a grim vision of the collapse of society; as pessimistic as it is hypnotic and momentous. We will present the film in the next edition of the Timeless cycle, this time in winter! Below we include a summary of what we have prepared. The co-organizer of the screening is the Timeless Film Festival Warsaw.
