Moorish tiles in linear relief technique
All-day ceramic workshop – Warsaw
I invite you to an all-day ceramic workshop where you will create your own Moorish ceramic tiles inspired by the geometric ornamentation of southern Spain and Morocco. You will learn the linear relief technique (Arista / Cuenca) — one of the oldest and most noble methods of separating glazes.
These workshops combine craft, history and creative relaxation. For one day you will immerse yourself in a calm, manual process of working with clay, form and glaze — in the rhythm of repetitive gestures, away from everyday hurry.
How will the workshop look?
- The workshop is divided into two parts of one day and begins with a short theoretical introduction:
- what the linear relief technique (Arista / Cuenca) is
- where it comes from and how it was used in the ceramics of Andalusia and Morocco
- what ornamental geometry is and how to read its rhythm and structure
- a demonstration of finished tile examples and a step-by-step walkthrough of the whole process
Part I – clay, tile and relief (approx. 11:00–14:00)
- making the tile from clay by hand
- learning to work with plaster and making your own plaster mold
- pressing the tile and building the linear relief that will separate the glaze colors
- working on patterns inspired by Moorish ornamentation of varying difficulty
You will take your plaster mold home so you can later make more tiles yourself.
Break: about 30 minutes.
Part II – decorating tiles with glazes using the linear relief technique - Arista/Cuenca (approx. 2.5–3 hours)
- working on prepared bisqueware
- learning to decorate tiles with glazes in the linear relief technique
- a large selection of glazes and colors
- depending on your pace, you may create 2 or 3 decorated tiles
The Arista technique allows for clean color separations and a very decorative, noble effect after firing.
What will you take away from this workshop?
- hand-made tiles and a plaster mold
- experience working with line, rhythm and mindfulness
- the ability to plan compositions and use ornament as an ordered structure
What skills will you develop?
- independently creating clay tiles
- designing and making plaster molds
- drawing precise lines and controlled filling of color fields
- practical understanding of ornamental geometry affecting pattern structure
Who are these workshops for?
- beginners — everything explained step by step
- advanced participants who want to learn a new technique
- lovers of ceramics, ornament and history
- those who want to creatively relax and get away from everyday life
