Field theory is one of the three “pillars” that supports the theory and practice of Gestalt therapy. The other two pillars are phenomenology and dialogue. Often this description, while accurate, can be confusing because the relationships among these three pillars can be unclear. Imagine Gestalt therapy theory as a tree. Its roots are embedded in the earth, the ground of the situation, the trunk arising from the grounded roots and the branches emerging from the trunk with its leaves to provide unlimited energy for the continued growth of the tree. In this metaphor, the situated rootedness of the tree represents the phenomenal field, the trunk signifies our phenomenological approach, and the leaves indicate the role and function of dialogue. Together, these characteristics define Gestalt therapy theory, and each is necessary for the distinctiveness of Gestalt theory. Field theory is the foundation on which Gestalt therapy theory rests. It is what we call “the situation” which defines the focus of the model. This organism/environmental situation is the starting point of our gestalt investigations and is focused on the unique relationship between the organism and its environment. Specifically, we will consider this implication that it is the O/E relationship that ontologically precedes both the organism and its environment. This implication includes: - The principle of organization - The principle of contemporaneity - The principle of singularity - The principle of changing process - The principle of possible relevance We will experientially explore and discuss how to work with these implications by considering: - The phenomenal and the phenomenological field - The significance of relationality - The implications of relationality for identity and constancy - The concept of existence as a “situated event of relatedness” - The process of personal actualization (movement / difference / awareness / embodied contacting/choicefulness) Facilitator: Jay Levin MA (Clin Psych), LMHC, NCC has practiced and taught counseling and psychotherapy for over 35 years.
