“Unhomely” is a proposal of a certain shared sensibility, tied to experiences of forms of alienation characteristic of the precariat. Points of agreement include a streak of light on the ceiling, darkness behind one’s back in the corner of the room, disruptions of the sense of time, interface languages and the view out the window one must not get used to. Paradoxically, unity is sought here in experiences of alienation. The exhibition title is inspired by Freud’s category “Unheimliche”, commonly translated today as “uncanny”, although—as Mark Fisher notes—the original sense is better captured by the adjective “unhomely”.
