Łukasz Suskiewicz's latest book is a novel inspired by real events from 1761. A French ship carrying enslaved people wrecked in the Indian Ocean. Surviving sailors and enslaved people lived together on an island of 1 km². In the book, real characters and events mix with fictional ones, and the narrative freely moves through time and space,描ing a picture of adventurous times when human life was worth little.
"Kauri" is an attempt to describe the randomness that determines the fates of groups and individuals — a microhistory happening on the margins of general history, which is not universal but culturally appropriated. It is a microhistory in which nothing seems probable, except the harm that is real.
