The Masterpieces Gallery of the Royal Castle is one of those places that, paradoxically, has been visited less and less in recent times, even though it holds true gems of European painting. It is here that you will find two authentic Rembrandt paintings, as well as works by Italian, Dutch, and French masters, creating an extraordinary story about collecting, artistic taste, and the ambitions of former elites. During this walk, we will look at the Masterpieces Gallery not only as a collection of outstanding paintings, but also as a testimony to the history of this collection—from the royal collections of Stanisław August, through the legacy of the Lanckoroński family, to the contemporary exhibition that we can see today at the Royal Castle. We will talk about how and why these works came to Warsaw, what former collectors sought in art, and why these particular paintings were recognized as masterpieces. We will calmly examine selected works, slowly uncovering their meanings, contexts, and subtle details. During the walk, you will hear answers to questions such as: - where in the Royal Castle the Chamber of Deputies was originally located, - what the route from the Chamber of Deputies to the Chamber of Senators looked like, - whether Eastern influences in weaponry were merely decorative or a real advantage on the battlefield.
