DIVINE TALES is a series of classes at the Children's University of Interesting History about mythology and religion, aimed at presenting the richness of human beliefs throughout history. Together, we will embark on a journey to the most distant times. We will also visit the farthest corners of our globe. The classes will explore the genesis, development, social functions, and symbolism of myths and beliefs of selected religious systems. We will pay attention to their impact on contemporary society and culture. After all, one cannot fully understand people without understanding what they believed in.
Meeting on 18.01.2025:
SAGAS, SKALDS, AND VIKING BELIEFS
Viking beliefs were deeply rooted in Norse mythology. At the head of the pantheon of gods stood Odin, the god of war, wisdom, and death. Other well-known gods include Thor, the god of thunder and protector of mankind, Freyja, the goddess of love and fertility, and Loki, the god of trickery and change. Norse mythology was primarily passed down orally, through poems and sagas recited by skalds. Vikings also believed in magic and divination, and shamans played an important role in their communities. Offerings were to be made to the gods, and in exceptional situations, even human sacrifices.
