The Director of the Dream of the King of Denmark, at Hamlet's advice directed to Horatio, does not look at the stage but at the audience. He is interested in the directions in which the viewers' heads will turn, horror covered by the appearance of indifference, attempts to convince themselves that what they are watching does not concern them, that the dreams of the dying king are not their nightmares. The very criminal act – the murder of the King of Denmark is a pretext to talk to the audience about Shakespeare.
