Curators – Katarzyna Broniarek-Niemczycka and Filip Niedenthal – will guide us through the exhibition, which presents over a hundred photographs from the impressive oeuvre of Romuald Broniarek, a photographer and photojournalist for the magazine 𝑃𝑟𝑧𝑦𝑗𝑎𝑧́𝑛́.
'When we started reviewing archival issues of the magazine, we were struck by the scale of deception. Nevertheless, the reception of Broniarek's photographs – a talented photographer – remains unchanged,' emphasize the curators.
Broniarek, like many photographers working during the PRL era, took photos that were meant to please the editorial staff of 𝑃𝑟𝑧𝑦𝑗𝑎𝑧́𝑛́ and be published, but also those 'unnecessary' ones, captured while realizing the main theme, in which he could allow himself greater creative freedom.
'Among the selected photographs are mainly works from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. We decided to focus on frames torn from context, captured – as if out of the corner of the eye – often on the peripheries of official events, where the author's interest in what seems ordinary, everyday, yet surprising and intriguing, is visible. These are scenes photographed with humor and sensitivity, sometimes ironic, touching – and technically excellent. The collected works present Poland as it was, Poland 'by the way,' often shown against the expectations of the photo commissioners,' add the curators, Katarzyna Broniarek-Niemczycka and Filip Niedenthal.
