We invite you to a meeting about Dutch housing.
The Dutch housing system is an exceptionally interesting case study. It is not only about analyzing characteristic projects, or the recognizable brand of Dutch architecture, nor about the still impressive percentage of social housing – which constitutes almost 1/3 of all units in the Netherlands.
We want to talk about the history of the transformation of this system. What opportunities did construction carried out by 'woningcorporaties' (housing corporations, equivalent to our TBSs) offer? Why has their role changed today? Are there still interesting housing projects being developed in the Netherlands? And how did it happen that a country once cited as a model now suffers from a gigantic problem of lack of available housing?
The event will be in English.
The meeting will feature:
▪️ Walter van Dijk – partner at NL Architects. He will talk not only about the project Kleiburg in Amsterdam presented at the exhibition but also about the ongoing project transforming a 'correctional facility' into starter homes for young people.
▪️ Arie Lengkeek – co-author of the book 'Operatie Wooncoöperatie'. He will discuss the history and contemporary conditions of the Dutch housing system. He will also present examples of grassroots initiatives that are trying to rebuild social housing in the Netherlands.
▪️ Zofia Piotrowska – curator of the exhibition Product mieszkanie, editor of the Architectural Quarterly RZUT, and a board member of the Housing Association WSPÓŁ. She will lead the debate.
The event is partnered with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
