(…) So what is time?
If no one asks me about it, I know,
but if I want to explain it to the one asking,
then I do not know.
St. Augustine, Confessions
The graphic scheme of the passage of time shows an arrow running from left to right. Any point on it marks a specific moment, defining the others as past or future on the timeline. However, in everyday experience of time, it is somewhat different: we experience it only in the punctual feeling of now, which smoothly transitions into its subsequent manifestations.
The present is therefore, by its nature, extremely ephemeral. The past, which is no longer there, and the future, which is not yet there, seem equally mysterious. The only access to any tangible reality seems to be memory, in which we preserve fragments of impressions inherited from the constantly passing acts of the present.
In our everyday experience of the world, we are constructed to perceive causality, in a temporal order divided into segments arranged in accordance with the arrow of time. Relativistic physics has undermined this order, pointing to the relativity of the concepts of both time and space, whose parameters depend on the observer's reference point, matter, and the force of gravity.
Perhaps, as Isaac Newton put it, time, but also space, are independent aspects of objective reality, which is a configuration of an infinite number of variants of its subsystems, and we are contained within one of them, as a spacetime subset with its own characteristics. And similarly, together with the other subsets, we co-create a whole, inscribing ourselves into the structure of the Universe by the power of our intentions, attempts, mistakes, and all other activities undertaken in the course of daily hustle.
Photography and its derivative media bring us closer to the scheme of transience. But above all, they are carriers of memory, often more lasting than a single human existence. Photography is also a means of expression, through which it becomes possible to approach individual, authorial interpretations of the concept of time itself.
The authors of the exhibition are current members and supporters of the Author's Laboratory of Photography from Wrocław, founded in 2015 by Piotr Komorowski. ALF is a platform for the exchange of artistic ideas between photographers and representatives of other media, oriented towards deepening and enriching the skills of creative expression.
