When, at the end of the 1960s, Pedro Almodóvar left his family home in the province and arrived in Madrid, the decline of Francisco Franco's long-standing dictatorship could already be felt beneath the surface. The general's death in 1975 became a symbolic catalyst for systemic transformation in Spain. For representatives of the young generation growing up during the deep Francoism, it was somehow a permission to gradually step out of the shadows. Thus, art, music, fashion, and film in the capital were eventually taken over by underground young creators, whose slogans became freedom, vitality, and imagination. At the epicenter of the countercultural boom of the late 1970s and early 1980s was Pedro Almodóvar, who, with his interests, temperament, and way of being, found himself in the right place and time. He found environmental support for the realization of creative desires hidden since childhood – to create a reality opposed to the one in which he had to live: a world that was liberated, electrifying, uncompromising, and free of taboos. From this need, Almodóvar's iconic cinema was born, which quickly moved from the underground to the red carpet, bringing him prestigious awards at international festivals, including Cannes, Venice, and making him a laureate of the Oscar and Golden Globe. Cinema, which is still regarded as a unique cinematic universe of femininity – dominated by the figures of colorful birds: mothers, daughters, and lovers, nuns, prostitutes, and artists, to whom the director has paid tribute for almost half a century.
We invite you to the screening of three special films, two of which have not been released in Poland. This is a unique opportunity to see one of Almodóvar's first feature films, 'Pepi, Luci Bom and Other Girls from the Neighborhood' (1980) on the big screen. It is also a chance to listen to the fate of 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown' (1988) in the cinema hall and to learn 'All About My Mother' (1999).
